Perhaps the most famous approach to ‘graduateness’ is that developed by Alverno College, a women's college in Milwaukee. The Alverno approach is based on eight 'abilities': communication, analysis, problem-solving, valuing in a decision-making context, interaction, global perspectives, effective citizenship and aesthetic response.  These abilities, assessed independently of the faculty, are all assessed irrespective of the course being studied.

An enquiry from Cohort 1 led me to put down some of my thoughts about the practical application of the Graduate Skills module. The researcher had asked for a letter showing that the BA Honours Learning, Technology, Research would be specifically useful for a specialist career which is on the horizon.
Respondents to the survey were of the view that an undergraduate degree is a worthwhile experience and equips graduates with a range of abilities and skills in addition to knowledge. However, despite being intellectually equipped for the world of work, graduates are often ill-equipped to fit into the culture of the work-place.
