The Alverno approach is based on eight 'abilities': communication, analysis, problem-solving, valuing in a decision-making context, interaction, global perspectives, effective citizenship and aesthetic response.  These abilities, assessed independently of the faculty, are all assessed irrespective of the course being studied.
