Water pressure

Based on an article in the National Geographic magazine.

What other facts can you find out about access to clean water ?

Make a web page or mail me some info and I will add it to this site.

this guy is drinking water from a new well in Ethiopia - only 10 - 20 percent of Ethiopeans have access to clean water.

There are about 6 billion people on the Earth and there ain't really enough water to go round unless we do something about the way we use and distribute it.

Water is as scarce as sand is plentiful during the dry season in Ethiopia, where young Hamar women must dig deep into a parched riverbed for meager cupfuls of fresh water. By 2025 a third of the world’s projected population of about eight billion could face severe water shortages.

Fresh water surges toward Mexico City’s 18 million people after being diverted from the Borracho and Lerma Rivers. Diversions, dams, and canals regulate and reroute close to 60 percent of 227 of the world’s largest rivers, primarily to supply agriculture with water. Irrigation accounts for 70 percent of all water use, and much of that water is wasted—more than half is lost to evaporation and runoff long before reaching any crops.

The Earth has 333 million cubic miles (1.39 million cubic kilometers) of water, 97.5 percent of it is too salty to use. Of the water that remains, nearly 70 percent is tied up in glaciers and ice sheets, and 30 percent is groundwater, much of it beyond reach in deep aquifers. What’s left for the planet’s 6.2 billion people? Less than .01 percent of Earth’s water.
