Reflection 1
An aha moment
Place
conversation with critical friend
discussion about the point of listing transferable skills provoked by S's extensive list of hers, some of which I felt were very tenuous.
Critical incident
Suddenly remembering my experience as a Job Centre administrator 20 years ago. People who'd been on training courses and new graduates would come with CVs listing their transferable skills and ask to be put forward for jobs which I knew the employer would not consider them for. It caused them anguish as they'd been taught that these skills were acceptable to employers and me anguish because I knew I'd be in trouble if I put them forward for interview.
My espoused theory
that many of these people could have done the job on offer
Theory in action
explained gently that employer would not see them, not put them forward.
Governing variables
high unemployment
other people had more experience and qualifications
My own job insecurity - short term contract
Why is it important now?
because I'm about to enter the job market and am feeling insecure, vulnerable and ill-equipped. Worried about issues concerning my age and lack of experience.
Action Plan
Let go of this old memory which is getting in the way of my completing this task
Reassure myself that I still value the insight that it holds.
