By using this technique the teacher may be able to identify the mistaken goal choices the pupil has made. There is an assumption that once having identified these as mistaken goals the pupil will be motivated to take part in the rest of the process to make the required changes in their behaviour. It is as if pointing out their mistaken goal will remove their attachment to it. This doesn't seems to tally with my own experience with children who may cling doggedly to such choices despite what seems to us to be overwhelming evidence that they are mistaken.
