Reflecting on the staff meeting.
From my private learning journal
Reflecting on this staff meeting is difficult. I have qualms about the ethics of looking in public at the details.
Once I got home I started to think about the need for consistency identified in the meeting. At the end of the meeting people felt stalled and unsure of the direction they wanted to take.
I knew from earlier conversations that what the teachers meant by consistency was not that they all responded to behaviour problems in the same way but rather that there should be agreement about what level of response each specific type of behaviour elicits.
This made me think of the levels of behaviour chart in the EBD book. Each behaviour (e. g. swearing - level 1, consistent swearing - level 2, swearing at a member of staff - level 3) is given an agreed level and appropriate responses can be clearly spelled out. These levels of behaviour and consequences can be shared with pupils and parents. This can be done in conjunction with an explanation of rewards schemes as well.
I resolved to photocopy the pages and share them with interested members of staff as it seemed to give us a way forward.
I did this. Showed it to several members of staff and it was then discussed in the staff room with the deputy head. It got a very positive response - the deputy head passed it on to the head who was also impressed with the idea. I emphasised that we could use it as a starting point for agreeing our own school standards for unacceptable behaviour.
The head came and thanked me for finding the chart. I felt slightly uncertain in case she felt I had interfered in some way. I realised that this was probably me being slightly over-sensitive.
