Research rationale
Currently many resources produced and shared on-line by schools, institutions or individuals are used by others without any way of feeding back, sharing good practice or other collaborative interactions. Collections of 'useful' web based resources are made off-line by individuals and never shared with others. Even where on-line pages of links exist they require regular updates to remain useful and there is often no mechanism for users to report broken links, rate sites or provide other feedback.
The 'read write web' is based on the introduction of internet tools that provide facilities for users to interact with the resource providers and other users. These include web logs (blogs), wikis (sites which allow users to edit), photo sharing/social tagging sites like Flickr, social bookmarking sites like FURL which allow users to tag sites and share their favourites, the use of RSS feed readers (allowing users easily access recent postings to blogs they are subscribed to and to share their list of blogs with other users.)
I will explore current use of internet resources I provide and share techniques I have learned to facilitate collaborations that cut across national and educational boundaries.
I will look at
• current uses of my resources
• users perceived problems with those resources
And then:
• what improvements the "read-write web" could bring to them
I am currently providing (on my blog, in my web space, and on the photograph sharing web based application Flickr) some on-line resources which have been created from aspects of my work for school and for the Network Learning Community, for which I am a research assistant. These will form the basis of my first cycle. Introducing a range of opportunities for connection and collaboration to these resources will form my first actions. I will introduce a range of feedback facilities to the resources I provide on-line.
These will be:
1. Introduce a blog where I will link to photos and where they can be
described, and comments added (without having people having to join Flickr).
2. Link from my resources about Hansel and Gretal and the Telling into Writing project to a blog
3. Link my pages on practical literacy ideas to a wiki which will allow people to edit and make amendments to the resources
Further actions will emerge from analysis of the data collected.
As a provider of educational resources I will be aiming to improve my practice. The research may be potentially of use to other resource providers. It will also benefit me, and potentially others, as users of educational resources. I hope to encourage the formation of collaborative relationships, across educational and cultural boundaries, around specific resources and to enhance the use of these resources. It may encourage others to use similar techniques in their context to facilitate improvement in their practice.
